The Evangeline Oak located in St. Martinville, is described in Longfellow's poem "Evangeline." The classic poem describes Acadian Exile from Nova Scotia in 1755.
If you cannot visit the Evangeline Oak, THE 7 recommend a visit to the Acadiana Memorial website. Besides a tribute to the 3000 who found refuge in Louisiana after their exile from Acadie, the site gives an excellent history about the Evangeline Oak and Longfellow.
Numerous festivals are held annually in St. Martinville and St. Martin Parish such as the Creole-Zydeco Festival at Adam Carlson Park and the Pepper Festival in downtown St. Martinville.
