Opelousas is the Parish Seat of St. Landry Parish. This Acadiana city is located on Interstate 49 just north of Interstate 10. Opelousas is approximately 235 miles East of Houston, 65 miles West of Baton Rouge, and 130 miles  West of New Orleans. Alexandria, LA is approximately one hour North.
Because it also borders Hwy 190, Opelousas is a prominent participant of the Acadiana Trail. Once a primitive path used by Indians, the Acadiana Trail provides an east-west alternative to Interstate 10 offering a historic and scenic route from Beaumont to Baton Rouge, LA.

Events, Attractions, Arts & Culture
The Opelousas Little Theatre offers an impressive website that details their commitment to provide an outlet for creativity and entertainment. The Opelousas Little Theater is housed in a 19th Century Episcopal Church in South City Park. It is the oldest running theater in the area. The web site includes an on-line form to volunteer time, talent or funds.
Two major festivals are held annually in Opelousas. The Opelousas Spice and Music Festival is held the first weekend each June with Zydeco representing just one musical element! It is a family festival offering a variety of music while promoting the area's prominent spice industry. Pepper eating contests, food booths, a jazz brunch, and a cook-off, are just a few of the events! In October, comes the Yambilee festival to support the local Yam industry. Arts, crafts, pageants, parades and exhibits contribute to make the Yambilee one of the many popular festivals in Louisiana. Opelousas plays a rich role in celebrating Mardi Gras, including its annual "fat  Tuesday parade." Evangeline Downs racetrack contributes to the local economy and provides great entertainment.
Music! Can you spell Zydeco? The Plaisance community of Opelousas hosts an annual Zydeco festival, a festival promoting Zydeco since 1892! The Festival International de Louisiane celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2006. In addition to the musical performances at the April Festival International, Louisiana Crossroads offers a significant concert series across the state.
Opelousas residents support the Ragin Cajuns of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
